چکیده

In two experiments participants rated the similarity of melodic contours presented as auditory (melodies) and visual (line drawings) stimuli. Longer melodies were assessed in Experiment 1 (M = 35 notes); shorter melodies were assessed in Experiment 2 (M = 17 notes). Ratings for matched auditory and visual contours exceeded ratings for mismatched contours, confi rming cross-modal sensitivity to contour. The degree of overlap of the surface structure (the relative position of peaks and troughs), and the strength and timing of the cyclical information (the amplitude and phase spectra produced by a Fourier analysis) in the contours predicted cross-modal similarity ratings. Factors such as the order of stimulus presentation (auditory-visual or visual-auditory), melody length (long versus short), and musical experience also affected the perceived similarity of contours. Results validate the applicability of existing contour models to cross-modal contexts and reveal additional factors that contribute to cross-modal contour similarity.

Pitch contour impairment in congenital amusia: New insights from the Self-paced Audio-visual Contour Task (SACT)

Individuals with congenital amusia usually exhibit impairments in melodic contour processing when asked to compare pairs of melodies that may or may not be identical to one another. However, it is unclear whether the impairment observed in contour processing is caused by an impairment of pitch discrimination, or is a consequence of poor pitch memory. To help resolve this ambiguity, we designed ...

Polynomial functions as a representation of melodic phrase contour

The present paper explores a novel way of characterising the contour of melodic phrases. Melodic contour is represented by a curve that can be derived from fitting a polynomial equation to the pitch values given the note onsets. To represent contour numerically, we consider the coefficients of the polynomial equation as well as the time limits of the melodic phrase. After a brief review of diff...

A Melodic Similarity Measure Based on Human Similarity Judgments

Music software applications often require similarity-finding methods. One instance involves performing content-based searches, where music similar to what is heard by the listener is retrieved from a database using audio or symbolic input. Another instance involves music generation tools where compositional suggestions are provided by the application based on user-provided musical choices (e.g....

Melodic Variations: Toward Cross-Cultural Transformation

We all share similar innate emotions, but our cultural experiences nurture us to express them differently. The musical form “theme and variations” offer us a unique lens to uncover in each culture the relationships between the musical surface that touches us most directly, and the underlying structures that are more abstract. Variations are musical surfaces composed to explore the expressive po...

A Stochastic Representation of the Dynamics of Sung Melody

In this paper, we propose a stochastic representation of a sung melodic contour, called stochastic phase representation (SPR), which can characterize both musical-note information and the dynamics of singing behaviors included in the melodic contour. The SPR is constructed by fitting probability distribution functions to F0 trajectories in the F0-∆F0 phase plane. Since fluctuations in singing c...
